Suspended sentence for Derry man who attempted to use someone else's bank card

William Stephen Stokes (38) of Collon Lane in Derry appeared charged with fraud by false representation
A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today for fraud after the court heard he had tried to take money using someone else's bank card.
William Stephen Stokes (38) of Collon Lane in Derry appeared charged with fraud by false representation on October 13 2020.
The court heard that a man claimed his bank card had been taken and made accusations towards Stokes.
A new card was ordered and a short time after it had been delivered someone tried to withdraw £300 from an ATM.
The request was refused and Stokes was observed leaving his flat with his then partner and going to the ATM in question.
Stokes also admitted two charges of possessing drugs on November 17 2022 and on November 9 2023.
Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that drug abuse had been at the root of the offences as Stokes was trying to pay for his own habit.
He said since these offences Stokes had sought assistance and was making progress.
Stokes was sentenced to 8 months in prison suspended for 3 years.
