A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with criminal damage.

Emmett Hegarty (20) of Beallachmor in Derry was charged with, on June 5, 2022, kicking a car and smashing the windscreen with a bottle.

The owner of the car contacted Hegarty the following day seeking compensation but Hegarty refused to pay for the damage.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the offence occured while Hegarty had a suspended sentence which has since expired.

Deputy District Judge John Connelly said that the incident 'could've been much worse' considering the use of the bottle, sentencing him to six months in custody, suspended for twelve months and a compensation order of £320.
