Suspended sentence for Derry man who stole 19 bottles of alcohol

Ryan Keenan (32) of no fixed abode appeared charged with the theft of £60 worth of alcohol and disorderly behaviour
Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man stole 19 bottles of alcohol and then threw himself on the bonnet of a car trying to claim he was knocked down.
Ryan Keenan (32) of no fixed abode appeared charged with the theft of £60 worth of alcohol and disorderly behaviour on March 20.
The court heard police were contacted about theft on March 20 when the defendant entered a Eurospar store placed 19 bottles of alcohol and left without paying.
The defendant then returned the next day and was recognised by facial recognition technology.
He left the store and was followed by a member of staff and when Keenan saw the vehicle he threw himself on the bonnet and when police arrived he was lying on the ground.
When police approached him he became abusive calling police 'black b------s'.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said the theft occurred on the defendant's birthday and he had no recollection of the incident.
He said Keenan accepted everything that had been said and was prepared to pay restitution.
The solicitor said Keenan had 'a limited record' in this jurisdiction.
Keenan was sentenced to three months in prison suspended for two years and ordered to pay £60 in restitution.
