A man who admitted stealing a Rolex watch and jewellery valued at £9,000 from his former partner has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Robert Davis (35) of Ballinacross Meadows in Derry admitted stealing the items on dates between February 1 and March 23 this year.

He also pleaded guilty to indulging in a course of action deemed domestic abuse between March 1 and May 8, 2023.

The court heard that the injured party reported to police on May 7 that she had been subjected to domestic abuse over a period of time.

The abuse consisted of abusive messages, voice messages and the like.

She also said that Davis had stolen items of jewellery that he had given to her as gifts.

Defence counsel Michael Donaghey said that there had been 'nasty messages' but no physical violence.

He said that the jewellery had been returned and there had been no issues since May.

The barrister said that the defendant had since left the jurisdiction and was living and working in another country.

Davis was sentenced to four months in prison suspended for 18 months and had a Restraining Order imposed for a period of two years.
