Tierney backs erection of gates at Shantallow underpass

SDLP Shantallow Councillor Brian Tierney has welcomed Derry City Council's backing for a move to gate off Madam's Bank Road underpass.

Councillor Tierney was speaking after the local authority issued a notice stating an intention to permit the erection of gates at the tunnel (pictured above)

He said: “This is very welcome news for local residents who have had to put up with anti-social behaviour in this area for years. I'm very hopeful that this move will result in gates being put in place at the underpass, with the support of local housing associations, sooner rather than later.

“I have no doubt that gating off the tunnel will help curb the anti-social activity of large numbers of young people who regularly descend on the underpass.”

Cllr Tierney concluded: “I have worked closely with residents, Derry City Council and housing associations in recent months to have this area secured so that local residents do not have to suffer any longer.”
