Unionists urged to attend Derry 1916 commemorations
Unionists are being urged to get involved in events being held in Co Derry next year to commemorate the 1916 Rising in Dublin.
The Ballinascreen branch of the Sean Larkin 1916 Society has announced plans to organise a ‘range of debates and lectures’ in the local area as part of the commemorations.
The group wants to see people from the unionist community play their part in the events..
Séan Ó Brolcháin, Public Relations Officer with the local branch of the Sean Larkin 1916 Society, said they were aimed at everyone in the community.
“We encourage and hope the unionist community might engage with us in these discussions,” he said.
“To some in that community the concept of republicanism might seem alien but it shouldn't be.
“In the past a huge element of what today constitutes the Unionist community have played an important role within the development of republicanism and the democratic process.
