David Monteith (36) of St. Columb's Wells in Derry appeared charged with causing grievous bodily harm and stealing a phone and £300 from the alleged victim

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court following an assault during which the victim was said to have four teeth knocked out.

David Monteith (36) of St. Columb's Wells in Derry appeared charged with causing grievous bodily harm and stealing a phone and £300 from the alleged victim.

Police initially spotted a man who claimed to have been assaulted by two men. He named one of the alleged assailants and identified the other when he saw him in the street.

Police identified the man that had been pointed out as Monteith and when they approached him his hands were said to have been covered in blood.

The court heard that Monteith subsequently tried to throw himself into the River Foyle.

The alleged victim said that he had been punched in the face, knocking out four teeth. He also claimed that Monteith had stolen his phone and £300.

Monteith denied the allegations and police objected to bail due to his 75 previous convictions, including a number of assault charges.

Defense solicitor Seamus Quigley, when applying for bail, pointed out that neither the phone nor the money were found on Monteith by police when they arrested him.

District Judge Barney McElhom called the assault 'quite serious' but granted bail with 'deep reservations'.

Montieth will appear again on October 24.
