A Derry councillor has called on “everyone” to get involved in a “major consultation” to be held on what facilities should be included in new parklands being created on the outskirts of the city.

The call comes from Sinn Fein Cllr Tony Hassan who was speaking yesterday as the former landfill site at Culmore got to its first stage of a major revamp with a “soft opening” of the new parklands there.

Cllr Hassan (pictured) said: “Today is the first step in the regeneration of this former landfill site with the opening of the green spaces and walkways.

“In January, there will be a major consultation to see what other facilities residents, sporting groups, schools want to see want here so I am appealing for everyone to get involved.

“This area is crying out for facilities so it’s important everyone’s views are taken on board about what they would like to see on the former landfill site such as sports pitches, children’s play park, walkways or cycle track, bird hides, natural habitat.

“The site offers a great opportunity to have something in place that can create long-term benefits not only for the local community but also for the wider population of Derry and the bordering county of Donegal.”
