'We must ensure Clipper festival returns’ – Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton

The success of this year’s Foyle Maritime Festival has been proven “by the thousands” of visitors and the millions of pounds brought into the economy over its duration that the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race must return to Derry, Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton has said.

Tens of thousands of people attended the eight-day festival which ended yesterday with the departure from the city of the Clipper crews (pictured).

Negotiations are underway in an attempt to bring the yachts back to the city in two years time.

Mr Middleton said this year’s festival was “spectacular” and, once again, “exceeded all expectations,” cementing city’s place as the favourite destination for the clipper race crews.

Given its success, Mr Middleton said he believed it was appropriate participates in future Clipper races and became host destination once again.

He concluded: “I will work with MLA colleagues, council and the relevant stakeholders to ensure this is achieved."
