Widespread condemnation of shooting in Galliagh area of Derry last night - 'Violent attacks have no place in our society'
Following reports that a 44-year-old man has been shot in the legs late on Monday night in Galliagh Park, SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney condemned the attack and expressed his concern at the 'increased number of violent attacks across the city'.
Mr Tierney said: “The people of Galliagh will be worried and frightened waking up to the news of a shooting in Galliagh Park last night. I completely condemn this attack. These violent attacks have no place in our society.
“I am deeply concerned about the increased number of violent attacks across the city we have seen in the past few weeks.
“These attacks were wrong in the past and they are still wrong now. As a member of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, I will be raising these concerns directly with the PSNI.”
"I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police as soon as possible."
The newly appointed Chair of the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership, DUP Alderman Drew Thompson, also condemned the shooting.
Speaking about the incident, Alderman Thompson stated: "These attacks and assaults should be rightly condemned by all members of our community. The attack on this man cannot and should not be justified.
“The people who carried out the shooting have no concern for people living in the area and no matter what rationale is put forward this type of assault has no place in our society.”
