Work to begin this week to remove trees at popular Derry park

A pathway within the Bay Road Park in Derry will be temporarily closed for tree maintenance works for a one week period starting from Wednesday, 25 February.

The path closure will commence from Da Vinci’s, Riverview and Garden Centre lower entrances.

A spokesperson for Derry City Council, apologising for any inconvenience caused said that access to the park during this temporary closure will be available from the Bay Road entrance only.

It emerged in November last year that residents living close to the Bay Road Park had received letters from Derry City Council informing them of plans to cut down Poplar trees in the park.

The trees (pictured above) are located along a walkway adjacent to the site where a number of football pitches are being constructed by a private developer.

Residents living nearby and regular users of the walkway, which is part of a nature reserve, reacted angrily to the plans and demanded that the trees be left as they are.

However, the developers said that the trees would pose a risk to their customers due to falling branches.
