John Meehan (31) of Foyle Road in Derry was given a suspended sentence

A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates Court charged with disorderly behavior and obstruction of police.

John Meehan (31) of Foyle Road in Derry was charged with the offences that occurred on June 21 2024.

Police arrived on the scene in the Guildhall Square and found Meehan to be shouting and screaming.

Police attempted to get him to stop but these efforts were repeatedly ignored, leading to his arrest.

Defence Barrister Sinead Rogan said that Meehan was dealing with addiction and 'significant' health issues at the time of the offences.

Deputy District Judge Brian Archer said that Meehan's offending has been related to his addictions, telling him 'your future is in your own hands' and sentencing him to one month in custody, suspended for twelve months.
