Ballybofey’s Laura Ní Aoidhne of TG4’s Ros na Rún was recognised with prestigious award at the Oireachtas Communications Awards in Killarney

A Ballybofey actress and journalist said she was “truly grateful” for all who have supported her, after she was awarded the Réalta Óg na Blíana (Young Star of the Year) at the Ghradaim Chumarsáide an Oireachtais (Oireachtas Communications Awards).

Laura Ní Aoidhne received her award at the ceremony held in Killarney, Kerry, on October 28.

The Oireachtas Communications Awards celebrate the high standards and exceptional efforts achieved within the Irish-language communications sector each year.

Awards were presented, recognising presenters, producers, journalists, columnists, actors, and radio and television programme-makers who have made an outstanding contribution across various media fields over the past twelve months.

Ní Aoidhne is a member of TG4’s long-running television series, Ros na Rún, playing the part of “the bubbly and brazen” Penny Fallon, having been announced as joining the cast in December 2024.

She is a graduate of Maynooth University and has an honours degree in Irish and Spanish.

Her passion for the Irish language followed her from St Mary’s Primary School to St Columba’s College.

Her ambition to gain fluency in our native language has taken the young Donegal actor on a varied career so far. Laura has worked as an Irish language volunteer as a digital content creator with the Irish News. In addition, the young actor has volunteered with Gael Linn, their online video channel Gaelbhratach along with BLOC, Raidio Fáilte and Raidio na Life.

Announcing her delight online, Laura said: “I attended the Oireachtas Communications Awards for the very first time while starting out in the sector as an intern with TG4 in 2024.

“I never imagined that, two years later, I would be attending again - nominated as the 'Young Star of the Year' for 2026.

“All of my work is incredibly important to me - my acting with *Ros na Rún*, my journalism with The Irish News, and my writing. It is a privilege to be able to work with Women’s Aid, specifically the 'Too Into You' campaign, and Ionad Hind Rajab.. I have poured my heart and soul into all of these projects.

“I wouldn't have won this award were it not for the people in my life—my family, my friends, and my colleagues. I am surrounded by people who support everything I do; colleagues who help me, guide me, and champion my progress. I wouldn't be anywhere without you all.

“A huge thank you to everyone who voted for me. I am truly grateful.”
