The operation was launched on Tuesday night after gardaí and emergency services were alerted to report that a woman aged in her 60s fell into the water at Pollet, Fanad.
A Garda spokesperson said a multi-agency response was launched involving the Coastguard and RNLI.
The woman’s body was subsequently recovered from the water and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Her body was transferred to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital for a postmortem examination.
