Buncrana brothers' amazing gift of life celebrated for Organ Donor Awareness Week

“The medical staff were amazing. Every single one of them made the whole process calm and reassuring. We will forever be grateful for all they have done for us”
As Ireland marks Irish Organ Donor Awareness Week from May 16–23, one Inishowen family’s remarkable story is shining a light on the extraordinary power of organ donation, brotherhood, and selfless love.
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, 39-year-old Gavin Doherty from Buncrana carried out an act of generosity so extraordinary it would change his brother Eugene’s life forever.
In a deeply emotional and courageous journey, Gavin underwent kidney donation surgery at Belfast City Hospital to donate one of his kidneys to his 46-year-old brother Eugene, who had bravely battled serious health challenges for several years.
Gavin’s operation began at 7am in Belfast, where his kidney was carefully removed before being flown across the Irish Sea to Hammersmith Hospital in London, where Eugene and his specialist medical team were waiting to carry out the life-saving transplant.
At 7pm that evening, just twelve hours later, Eugene received the incredible gift that would transform his future: a new kidney.
For Eugene, the transplant marked the beginning of a hopeful new chapter after years of illness and uncertainty, a chance at renewed health, more energy, and getting back to living life to the fullest.
The journey also carried deep emotional significance for the brothers, whose late mother, Patricia Doherty (née Gillespie), had travelled a similar road herself after receiving a kidney transplant from a deceased donor 18 years earlier.
That life-changing donation gave their family many more precious years and memories together, thanks to the generosity of one donor and their family.
Following the surgery, Gavin spent twelve weeks recovering away from work. Now fully recovered, he has returned to full health and is back enjoying sports and everyday life once again and, after several months of recovery, Eugene is also doing well and embracing life to the fullest, with renewed energy.
Gavin paid tribute to the outstanding medical teams and transplant coordinators in Belfast and London who made the operation possible and cared for both brothers throughout the process.
“The medical staff, from the very beginning, were amazing,” Gavin said. “Every single one of them made the whole process calm and reassuring. We will forever be grateful for all they have done for us.”
Meanwhile, Irish Organ Donor Awareness Week serves as an important reminder of the life-changing impact organ donation can have for families across Ireland. Stories like Gavin and Eugene’s highlight not only the medical miracles now possible, but also the extraordinary human kindness behind every transplant.
