“This investment will help safeguard against potential environmental issues and secure the long-term future of the filling station”

Essential works are underway at a busy filling station in Drung, Quigley’s Point, with the project expected to continue for the next few months.

The filling station, which is owned by Inishowen Co-op, is located along the busy R238 road linking Moville and Muff.

While the forecourt works are ongoing, the Londis shop, including its popular deli and coffee station, will continue to operate as normal.

The works, which began around a week ago, involve the replacement of the station’s existing fuel tank system.

Inishowen Co-Op said the investment follows an incident in February when one of the diesel tanks at its Drung premises developed a crack.

“In February, one of the diesel tanks at our Drung filling station developed a crack, most likely due to its age, which resulted in water entering the fuel,” the Co-Op said.

“We immediately closed the affected tank and worked closely with our insurers and the motorists affected to ensure the issues were fully resolved.”

The Board of Inishowen Co-Op subsequently recognised the need to take proactive action as the existing tanks approached the end of their working life.

The Co-Op has now invested in a new 70,000-litre replacement tank system. The investment is aimed at safeguarding against potential environmental issues while also securing the long-term future of the filling station and the employment it provides.

“This investment will help safeguard against potential environmental issues, secure the long-term future of the filling station and protect the full-time and part-time jobs it provides, including valuable employment for local students,” the Co-Op added.

The works are expected to take approximately ten weeks in total, meaning they are scheduled to continue until around mid-November.

Customers have been kept informed through signage at the shop and along the road, as well as via updates on the Londis Drung Facebook page and information provided directly by staff.

Inishowen Co-Op said it greatly appreciates the patience and continued support of customers while the essential works are completed.

The Co-Op also thanked customers across its various businesses in Inishowen, saying their support enables it to continue providing important local services and sustaining employment throughout the community.

“We would also like to thank all our customers across Inishowen Co-Op Carndonagh, Moville and Buncrana, the Garden Centre Buncrana, Inishleigh Feeds, Londis Drung, Inishowen Mart and Carndonagh Veterinary Practice.”
