Donegal allocated €2m through Social Housing Second-Hand Acquisitions Programme

The allocation is part of the capital funding allocations totalling €325 million which have been notified to local authorities in respect of the second-hand social housing acquisitions programme for 2025
Donegal County Council has been allocated €2 million for the Social Housing Second-Hand Acquisitions Programme, including tenant in situ purchases targeted at those most in need.
The allocation is part of the capital funding allocations totalling €325 million which have been notified to local authorities in respect of the second-hand social housing acquisitions programme for 2025.
Welcoming the Donegal allocation, local Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said: “The Government is committed to addressing and solving the housing issue and this latest allocation for Donegal will help increase the overall housing stock in the county. The good thing about this scheme is that Donegal County Council is being the flexibility to target this money to ensure its responses are tailored to local need.”
“The clear focus of Government is to increase the supply of new build social and affordable homes. Increasing the overall housing supply is key to addressing the housing challenge and in particular preventing and ultimately eliminating long term homelessness. Government however has and will continue to support a targeted second-hand social housing acquisitions programme which responds to the needs of the most vulnerable,” the Minister of State with responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy added.
€111 million has also been assigned for 82 new social housing projects across the country which will provide over 1,300 newly built homes with a total development cost value of €517 million. This €111 million has been allocated from the €450 million for social and affordable housing recently announced by government.
“Government has set ambitious targets for new-build social housing in the Programme for Government of an average 12,000 homes per annum out to 2030. To meet this ambition, we need to scale up supply, and these approvals represent a further expansion of the new-build social housing pipeline,” Minister McConalogue commented.
The social housing new-build projects approvals issued in recent weeks provide funding in 2025 to progress 82 projects which will deliver 1,325 homes over the period 2025 – 2027, 575 of which will be delivered this year.
