Donegal County Council moves to take charge of ten housing estates across county

Public consultation opens on plans affecting 468 homes in Letterkenny, Inishowen, Ballyshannon and Donegal Town
Donegal County Council has begun the process of taking ten housing estates across the county into public charge, a move affecting 468 homes.
The council published details of the proposed ‘taking-in-charge’ in the local press this week.
The move, usually sought by residents and management companies who are currently responsible for maintenance of the estate’s infrastructure and common areas, will see internal roads within each of the housing estates in Letterkenny, Killea, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, Burnfoot, Muff and Ramelton formally declared public.
The largest development Gleann Tain and Gort na Gréine in Letterkenny, which accounts for 152 homes. At the other end of the scale, The Paddocks in Ramelton has just four homes, while Iskaheen Park in Muff contains nine.
The estates included in the proposed taking-in-charge process are: Carraig Craobh, Creevesmith, Letterkenny; Ashlea Grove, Killea; An Banrach (The Paddocks), Ramelton; Glebe Crescent, Letterkenny; Beech Grove, Donegal Town; Iskaheen Park, Muff; Woodlands, Ballyshannon; Grianán Park, Burnfoot; Gleann Tain and Gort na Gréine, Letterkenny; and Harmony Hill, Letterkenny.
This is the second batch of estates to be formally taken-in-charge this year. In March, the council published plans to adopt responsibility for infrastructure in 13 other housing estates.
The taking-in-charge process ensures that key infrastructure - such as roads, footpaths, storm drains and public lighting - meets Council standards before being maintained as public assets. Once completed, residents will no longer be reliant on developers or management companies for essential services like road repairs or street lighting maintenance.
Maps showing the estates in question are available to view on the council’s website or can be inspected at public service centres during office hours.
Members of the public can make submissions or observations on the proposals in writing to the council by 26 June.
