Donegal Golf Club tees up plans for clubhouse expansion

Buncrana Golf Club is seeking permission for new locker room facilities and a training room as it looks to enhance its historic clubhouse.
Buncrana Golf Club has lodged plans for a significant extension to its historic clubhouse to enhance facilities for members and visitors.
The application, submitted to Donegal County Council by Francie McGrory on behalf of Buncrana Golf Club, seeks permission for the retention of an existing balcony and the construction of an extension to the side of the clubhouse.
The proposed development would provide additional locker room space and a dedicated training room, along with connections to existing services and associated site works.
The expansion will mark the latest chapter in the long history of Buncrana Golf Club, which has been in existence since 1890. However, research currently being undertaken by the Buncrana Golf Committee suggests golf may have been played on the site as far back as the early 1800s. If confirmed, it would make Buncrana the oldest nine-hole links golf club in Ireland.
The club has a proud tradition of members investing their own time and effort to improve facilities. During the early 1970s, members recognised that their existing clubhouse had fallen below par and set about creating a new facility.
The former building, constructed from a tin frame with a wooden interior finish, offered little protection from the elements. On particularly stormy days, sand from the nearby shore would blow through the structure.
Determined to create better facilities, club members carried out much of the construction work voluntarily during their spare time, delivering what was considered a modern clubhouse for its era.
By the late 1990s, however, the clubhouse once again found itself in the rough. As membership grew, changing expectations meant the clubhouse once again required upgrading. Following in the footsteps of earlier generations, club officials and members embarked on another major redevelopment project.
The resulting development, completed in the early 2000s, included new locker rooms, shower facilities, a reception area, a function room, and a kitchen, bringing the clubhouse firmly into the 21st centu/ry.
A decision on the application is expected from Donegal County Council by the middle of July.
Should the plans receive the green light next month, the historic club will be hoping its latest development proves another hole-in-one for golfers in Buncrana and beyond.
