Almost €4,000 in fines were dished in court to drivers detected speeding at Donegal’s first static speed camera.

Several cases were before Letterkenny District Court over unpaid fixed charge notices that were issued after detections by the camera, located on the N13 at Killyverry, Newtowncunningham.

The cases dealt with by Judge Emile Daly included three motorists who were caught speeding twice by the fixed camera, which was installed in December 2024. The speed limit on the road is 100km/h or 80km/h for HGVs.

Scott Magee, of Heath Hill, Newtowncunningham, was detected speeding twice in the space of a little more than an hour.

The camera clocked Magee at 109km/h at 4.11am on July 19, 2025. At 5.18am on the same date, he was detected traveling at €117.

Magee was fined a total of €690 and given four months to discharge the sum.

Amanda Greene from Gort na Mona, Dungloe, was caught speeding twice in the space of a few days.

At 4.51pm on November 1, 2025, Greene was detected driving at 109km/h and on November 4, 2025 she was detected at 111km/h.

Judge Daly fined Greene a total of €670 and she was given four months to pay.

Jayne Gallagher from Abbey Park in Manorcunningham was fined a total of €690 after being caught speeding twice by the fixed camera.

Gallagher was detected driving at 112km/h on February 21, 2025 and on October 28, 2025 she was clocked at 108km/h.

She was convicted and given four months to pay the fines.

Joseph Kennedy, from The Green, Ballymacool, Letterkenny, was detected driving at 126km/h on October 26, 2025 at 7.09am.

He was convicted and fined €380. Kennedy was given four months to discharge the fine.

Rhys McElhinney, of Craigadoes, St Johnston, was detected driving at 117km/h at 6.49am on November 8, 2025. He was convicted and fined €360 and given four months to pay.

Anil Kumar of Glenpark, Letterkenny, drove past the camera at 111km/h at 3.29am on October 12, 2025.

“I was following a taxi,” Kumar told the court.

Judge Daly fined Kumar €320 and gave him four months to pay,

Andrew Scally, with an address at The Pines, Herbert Park, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, was detected travelling at 110km/h at 8.09am on November 1, 2025.

Scally was convicted and fined €350 and given four months to pay the fine.

One woman had her case struck out after her solicitor, Mr Frank Dorrian, told the court that his client had nominated the name and address of a person to the fixed charge penalty notices office.

“They then sought to embark on some sort of an investigation for insurance details and dates of arrival and departure for this other person,” Mr Dorrian said. “She provided such information as best she could. There is a weakness in the system as I am not sure that the FCPN office is entitled to demand insurance documents.

“It is undoubtedly the case that my client nominated the name and address of another person who was doing the driving.”

Another person’s case was struck out after they informed the court that someone else was driving their vehicle.

“The Post Office was unclear to me as to how I could get this adjusted in the offending driver’s name,” they said. The case was struck out,.
