Billy Bustard has allowed his name to go forward as candidate for Mayor of Donegal Town in the forthcoming election on Friday. Best known for his fundraising for the Cancer Bus, Billy has raised thousands of euros over many years. Here he is with Sean Higgins, winner of a Quad in a Draw he organised in Nov 2022 which raised €36,000. Billy also captained the Waterbus for 12 years.

Most of you around Donegal Town would probably know me by now but for those of you who don’t, my name is Justin Coughlin, married for 43 years to my wife Agnes. I have always had a great love for Donegal Town and its environs and it would be a great honor and privilege for me to represent the people of Donegal Town as Mayor if I were lucky enough to be elected by you. I retired from the Army after 21 years Military Service. I then worked voluntarily in addictions services and then took up a position in the Foyle Haven working with the homeless and street drinkers of Derry City. I was a member of the local St Vincent De Paul and worked for a number of years in the Thrift Shop which I enjoyed immensely. I continue to have a keen interest in all things concerning community and charity organisations and have been actively involved in various charity fundraising events down through the years. I worked for five years in the Hotel Industry as golf sales manager and traveled extensively throughout Europe and the USA and I feel that this experience would be of benefit to me in helping to carry out the role of Mayor if I was elected to the Office. It’s great to see such a keen interest as shown by the number of candidates running for the office of Mayor and I would like to take this opportunity in wishing you all the very best in your campaign.

A Mayor for the Community Originally from Drimarone, I have been living in Ballydevitt for the past 30 years. I have always been deeply connected to Donegal Town. As a widow raising three children, I understand the challenges families face and the importance of strong community support. My work with children with additional needs has given me a deep appreciation for inclusion and opportunity for all. I have been active on the Bluestack Challenge Fundraising Committee, the Parents' Association, and a voluntary facilitator with Rainbows Ireland, supporting children coping with grief and family separation. Donegal Town has always supported me, and now I want to give something back. My focus as mayor will be on creating a cleaner, safer, and stronger Donegal Town for all. You'll often find me walking, spinning, or enjoying a coffee with friends. I would be honoured to have your vote!

Some of you might know me from Returning Light, the charity event I run every Christmas, which has raised over €20,000 for local mental health services, ensuring that support goes directly to the people of Donegal. Others might remember me from my days working in Holmes Service Station, The Forge Bar, or Donegal Golf Club. Growing up here as Mickey Martin, the postman’s daughter, I’ve always been rooted in this town, and I want to use this opportunity to represent the younger generation in Donegal Town. Now working in Digital Marketing and eCommerce management, I see even more ways to help local businesses thrive, both online and in-person. I’m running for mayor to bring fresh ideas to the table, support our community, and make Donegal Town a place where young people can build their future.
