Against All Odds: 22-year-old's designs have featured at Milan, Paris and London Fashion Weeks
A young Inishowen woman who refused to let a devastating scoliosis diagnosis stand in her way is making waves in the Australian hair and beauty industry, with her own designs recently reaching the prestigious Milan, Paris and London Fashion Weeks.
Megan Arbuckle, 22, originally from Bray Road, Burnfoot, has enjoyed a remarkable journey since leaving home for Perth, Australia, four years ago.
Having built a successful career as a hairdresser, she is now a salon manager and the founder of her own accessories brand, Ealá Collective.
Her story is all the more remarkable given the challenges she faced as a young teenager, when she was diagnosed with double scoliosis at the age of just 12.
She was in sixth class at St Aengus' National School in Bridgend when she attended Letterkenny University Hospital for a scan on her spine and was subsequently referred to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin, where the diagnosis was confirmed.
Professor McCormack advised that her spinal curvature was at 38 per cent, placing her on the borderline where surgery could become necessary. However, with regular exercise and swimming, there was hope that she might avoid an operation.
Megan opted against surgery and, despite the considerable uncertainty surrounding her condition, she never complained or allowed it to define her ambitions.
After attending Crana College, she went on to study health and beauty at North West Regional College in Derry.
Having spent several years travelling to Dublin for hospital appointments and monitoring, Megan qualified in her chosen field at 18 and was determined to follow her passion for hairdressing, despite knowing that the physically demanding nature of the job could present additional challenges.
She made the move to Perth with her partner, Oisín Caulfield, who is originally from Redcastle, and a cousin helped her secure a position in one of the city's hair salons.

Megan joined Salon Express, an Australian franchise with salons across the country, and quickly established herself within the industry. She has since progressed to become a salon manager, a remarkable achievement at just 22.
Her talents also earned her an opportunity to travel to Milan for an Alfaparf Milano Professional event, where she received an award recognising her work.
But Megan's ambitions extended beyond the salon floor. Having spent considerable time working alongside hairdressers and makeup artists, she began thinking about ways to make their everyday working lives easier.
This inspired her to start designing practical but stylish pouches specifically for hairdressing and makeup professionals.
What began as an idea has now developed into Ealá Collective, her own brand of specialist pouches designed with the needs of beauty professionals in mind.
In an extraordinary boost for the young entrepreneur, her designs were selected by Australian makeup artist and brand owner Beauty by Rosh for use at Milan, Paris and London Fashion Weeks.
Seeing her creations make their way onto the international fashion stage was, Megan said, a dream come true.
Her brand officially launched online last week and has already attracted encouraging reviews and considerable support, with interest also building through Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
The latest developments mark another exciting chapter for Megan and Oisín, who were granted permanent residency in Australia in June. The couple also recently purchased their first home together in Perth.
Proud mum May Arbuckle is delighted to see her daughter flourishing so far from home, having overcome significant challenges to build a future doing something she loves.
With her new business taking off, Megan will be hoping this is just the beginning. Watch this space.
