Gaoth Dobhair broadcaster Áine Ní Bhreisleáin says her latest TV series drew inspiration from a recent shift in her career.

The four-part series, Sonas, finished up earlier this month, having been screened weekly on TG4 for a month. The show followed Áine as she had been on a journey of change over the past year, with a move in her work as she tried to find more balance in her life.

She set out to try the latest therapies and treatments and met with people who have changed their lives in the pursuit of happiness across Ireland.

For five years, Áine presented the award-winning radio show ‘Bladhaire’ on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. However, last year, she left the station in pursuit of a career in freelancing.

Wellness was always something Áine was interested in, and when the opportunity arose to present this series, she was more than happy to do it.

“I left Raidió na Gaeltachta to pursue more freelance work,” she tells DonegalLive. “I did a travel show called ‘An Cósta Thiar’ with a production company called Aniar over two years ago. We were always meant to do another series, and they saw the opportunity to follow my journey of changing my lifestyle.

“I had a big interest in wellness, at a shallow level. I tried things like reflexology, sound baths and yoga. When I got offered a chance to explore it further, I was very excited.”

Over the course of the series, Áine tried her hand at everything from forest bathing and techno yoga to acupuncture, kombucha, and even howling at the moon.

“I never used to like going to the gym, so for the show I was sent to a personal trainer in Connemara,” she adds. “She worked out with me in the gym and made out a program for me to follow. I signed up for my local gym afterwards, and I have kept it up and always look forward to going.” placeholder image

Along with her recent stint on TV, Áine is also a columnist with ‘Seachtain’ - an Irish language section in the Irish Independent. Looking ahead to the future, she has opened up about her projects in the year ahead.

“I have a podcast series in the works, but that won’t be coming to fruition until later in the year,” she says.

“I am also working on another TV series with Aniar, which we will be shooting this Summer. It is currently in pre-production, but the idea is that I will go around the country, interviewing people who would be well-known and people who are not as well-known about their life and work.”

“It’ll hopefully air later this year or early next year,” she adds.

You can now catch up on Sonason the TG4 Player.
