A person was rescued after having a miraculous escape when falling from a cliff in Bundoran on Saturday morning.

The alarm was raised shortly after 7am and the casualty was located at the base of the cliff after landing on rocks.

Members of the public heard calls for help and a response was coordinated by the Malin Head Coast Guard.

Units from the Bundoran RNLI, Donegal Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service, and the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 118, were involved in the multi-agency response.

The incident occurred at the West End in Bundoran with local RNLI volunteers paged at 7.25am and on-scene at 7.36am.

The RNLI crew on scene worked to recover the casualty to the beach, where the helicopter had landed to assist.

The casualty was stabilised and airlifted by Rescue 118 before being transferred to Sligo General Hospital for further treatment.

“This was a challenging situation, and thanks to the swift response and teamwork between all agencies, the casualty was reached quickly and is now receiving the medical care they need,” Bundoran RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, Daimon Fergus said.

“We wish them a full recovery.”

Mr Fergus said they were grateful to the person who initially raised the alarm.

A spokesperson added: “The RNLI reminds anyone visiting the coast to stay well back from cliff edges, take extreme care near the water, and in an emergency, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
