Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig says that piers are important to local fishermen and have been ignored by successive governments

The issue of piers flooding when there is a very high tide needs to be addressed, an independent councillor has said.

The pier at Róshín, near Burtonport, and on Inis Bó Finne flood around twice a year when the tide is exceptionally high and Cllr Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig says these are matters that need to be addressed.

“A lot of work has been done at Cé Róishín and I welcome that - the work that has been carried out there, it has to be said, is exceptional. However, the work involves more than just the work at the pier - it involves local infrastructure and the road leading into it,” he said.

The local representative said since his election he has always been passionate about marine matters and that many people in the Glenties Municipal Area contact him in relation to coastal matters that need to be resolved.

“The pier at Inis Bó Finne where a crane was recently erected also floods once or twice a year. This has to be looked at as well,” he said.

He said that successive governments did not give the correct time, funding or attention to marine matters in this region. He said that these small piers are important to local fishermen: “It is very important that those in the fishing industry are helped because this industry has been let down time and time again by successive governments.”

He said the department of marine within Donegal County Council has been extremely active and focused on drawing down funding to resolve matters that need to be addressed in coastal areas.
