‘Good possibility’ of funds for safety measures at Donegal road

Safety measures have been repeatedly called for the area, which has seen approximately seven collisions in the last year
There is a “good possibility” that funding will be allocated to implement safety measures on a road in Donegal.
An Chrannóg, located in Gaoth Dobhair, lies on a 60kph stretch of road with broken lines. The area has been the site of multiple road traffic accidents over the years.
Sinn Féin councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh regularly highlights the issue at the Glenties Municipal District, most recently at the September meeting.
“The last number of accidents were quite serious,” Cllr Ó Fearraigh said. “There are footpaths along the road too. An Chrannóg is a busy location, with multiple night classes, and the chemist; there is huge footfall on this small stretch of road.”
Brendan McFadden, Area Manager for Roads and Transportation, expressed confidence that funding would be secured due to the number of collisions. A raised table has been suggested to slow the traffic, as most of the crashes have been speed-related.
“There is a good possibility of funding coming for the Crannóg,” Cllr Ó Fearraigh said. “This is in relation to the number of incidents that are happening there, to make the stretch of road much safer. Fingers crossed that funding will come and the works should be carried out by the end of the year.”
Previously, Mr McFadden confirmed that the road design team had met and that a road safety assessment will be undertaken in 2027. In the short term, signage was erected and a speed van visited the area.
