If you go down to the beach today, watch out for broken glass under your feet

Buncrana Tidy Towns volunteers have reported that shards of glass, some barely visible, have been found buried in the sand, posing a risk of injury
A community group in Buncrana has issued a public safety warning following a surge in broken glass discovered along local beaches.
The warning comes following the warmest day of the year, which was yesterday, Saturday, when temperatures reached 20 degrees for the first time in 2026.
The Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative has alerted residents and visitors to exercise caution if heading to the coast, particularly families with children, who could be barefoot.

The group says it appears that “smashing bottles was popular yesterday” during the good weather, leaving hazardous debris scattered across popular spots.
The Tidy Towns group has urged people to remain vigilant and to keep sandals or protective footwear on while walking along the sand.
Cleanup efforts are already underway, with Buncrana volunteers currently focusing on Ladies Bay. The local Tidy Towns Initiative confirmed that teams will continue their work across other locations, including Ned’s Point, Porthaw, Straghill, and Ludden.
The warning serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behaviour in shared public spaces, particularly as more people head outdoors to enjoy the better weather.
