In Pictures: Joy as Fr Colm Ó Gallchóir celebrates 50 years of priesthood

‘It is a privilege to serve in this parish in the midst of all the joy and sorrows, the challenges and opportunities’

Parishioners of Killybegs were joined by people near and far to mark the Golden Jubilee of the ordination of parish priest Fr Colm Ó Gallchóir. See the video above for a gallery of photos by Thomas Gallagher.

A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated by Fr Ó Gallchóir on Sunday, June 28, with refreshments served afterward in Foresters Hall.

In a message to his parishioners, Fr Ó Gallchóir said: “I feel very blessed to be granted the gift of 50 years in priestly ministry, made possible through the grace of God, the support of others, good health and my own humble efforts.

“The friendship and generosity of parishioners, of family, friends and fellow priests and many others are deeply appreciated. In particular, being here in Killybegs for 23 years has been such a great blessing.

“My constant companion for nearly 17 of those years was the late Charlie Boyle who made me feel so much at home in this parish. I am eternally grateful to Charlie. I was so energised by all those involved in different ministries and committees, in the church, in the schools and in the parish.

“The Sunday Masses are always a weekly highlight with the participation of all generations, including the children and the Parish Choir. Christmas and Easter were always so memorable. The enthusiasm, generosity and expertise of all involved in the Restoration of the Church building were overwhelming.

“Parish Secretary Ann O’Donnell has been invaluable both in her professional capacity with her cheerful presence and as a friend and Parish Sacristan Patricia O’Boyle has

been ever reliable and ever present. It is a privilege to serve in this parish in the midst of all the joy and sorrows, the challenges and opportunities.”

Having been ordained on June 27, 1976, Fr Ó Gallchóir spent 18 years with the Irish Chaplaincy in Britain, serving in four different London parishes. On his return to Donegal, he served for six years in Milford and Kerrykeel before taking up the post in Killybegs.

Parish Secretary Ann O’Donnell said: “On behalf of the Parish I would like to send our

warmest congratulations to Fr Colm on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee, celebrating 50 years of priesthood, the last 23 years here in Killybegs.

“Thank you for your kindness, compassion and unwavering dedication to the parish community.

“Wishing you good health and happiness and many more years of ministry.”

Following the Mass of Thanksgiving, the community gathered in Foresters Hall.
