Letterkenny’s Tropical World recently collaborated with Zoo Wojciechów in Poland as part of an international breeding programme. Zoo Wojciechów is home to two female black lemurs, which are considered a vulnerable species. They contacted Tropical World, which had one male black lemur. The zoos agreed to collaborate and Tropical World sent the black lemur as well as two black-and-white ruffed lemurs, which are a critically endangered species. In return, Zoo Wojciechów sent Tropical World pygmy marmosets and white-lipped tamarins. Barry and Punjana, black and white ruffed lemurs Pygmy marmosets, which are native to South America, are considered the world’s smallest monkeys. White-lipped tamarins, which also come from South America, are red-bellied monkeys. Tropical World, also known as Alcorns, opened its doors in 2011. The sanctuary is home to an array of exotic plants, a butterfly farm and a range of animals.
