Baby Rose, born last June to a rescue mare named Daisy at the sanctuary near Raphoe, faced a difficult start to life. Rejected by her mother shortly after birth, the tiny foal required bottle feeding every four hours for the first five months of her life.
Her story of survival and spirit was documented in a series of videos shared by the sanctuary. What began as a modest effort to update followers quickly gained international attention. One of over 120 videos posted by the sanctuary attracted more than 600,000 views, turning Baby Rose into a global sensation.
“For the first week, I posted a video every day - just for ourselves, really,” said Sandra Curran, who runs the sanctuary with her husband, Danny. “But honestly, it grew legs. This donkey is a worldwide phenomenon. Her struggle to survive is the biggest thing we have ever had.”
The Donegal Donkey Sanctuary, which has rescued and rehomed more than 800 donkeys over the past 15 years, is now preparing to celebrate Baby Rose’s first birthday in style. A party was at the sanctuary, open to the public, with cake and candles served.
