Celebrating women in agriculture at special event in Carrigans on May 28, with Ear To the Ground presenter Ella McSweeney

Ear To the Ground Presenter Ella McSweeney will be front and centre at a free event to celebrate Women in Agriculture in Donegal later this month.

‘Field of Her Own’, a celebration of the International Year of Women in Agriculture, is taking place at The Milk Bar in Carrigans on Thursday, May 28.

The event, which is being organised by Donegal IFA, in collaboration with Inishowen Development Partnership, will feature real-life stories from women in farming.

Joe Sweeney, Farm Family Support Worker with Inishowen Development Partnership and current Chairperson of Donegal IFA, said IDP is delighted to work with the IFA in bringing this flagship event to Inishowen.

“Recognising the International Year for Women in Agriculture, this event will celebrate the contribution of women to farming, while creating a space to support, connect, and inspire women across the sector,” said Joe.placeholder image
“Recognising the International Year for Women in Agriculture, this event will celebrate the contribution of women to farming, while creating a space to support, connect, and inspire women across the sector,” said Joe.

“We’re also thrilled someone of the calibre of Ella McSweeney (above) is MC’ing the day for us. Ella is a highly respected Irish food and farming journalist and has presented RTÉ’s award-winning programme Ear to the Ground since 2008,” added Joe.

A key part of the event will focus on diversification, sustainability, and innovation, while also exploring how women are increasingly using social media to educate consumers, strengthen trust in agriculture, and build stronger market connections.

A standout example of female-led diversification is the event host, 28-year-old Shannon Porter, owner of The Milk Bar, Carrigans.

Shannon diversified her family farm in 2021 by establishing The Milk Bar, a farm shop selling non-homogenised, non-standardised milk produced on the home farm, alongside homemade ice cream.

“It’s a real honour to host the Field of her Own event here during the International Year of Women in Agriculture,” said Shannon.

“This event is about celebrating women in the industry, inspiring the next generation, and creating space for important conversations. We’re delighted to welcome incredible guest speakers from across Ireland to share their experiences and inspire others,” she added.

Christine Friel, Farm Family Chairperson with Donegal IFA, said it is important to highlight the leadership role women play in shaping the future of Irish farming.

“Events like this are vital in recognising the role women play in farm families, farm businesses, and rural communities,” she explained. “Celebrating their contribution while encouraging future participation is central to building a sustainable agricultural sector.”

The day will conclude with a fashion showcase, celebrating rural enterprise, creativity, and entrepreneurship. The event is supported by Skillnet Ireland Farm Business and will raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Ireland, the chosen charity for the day.

It is free to attend, but booking is essential. It will take place at The Milk Bar, Carrigans F93ED34 at 11am on May 28. All welcome. For registration, visit: www.ifa.ie/WomenAgDonegal
