As the early hours of Saturday, May 9, approach, members of the Inishowen community will once again come together for a powerful and moving walk to symbolise hope, remembrance, and solidarity.

The annual ‘Darkness Into Light’ fundraiser will see a number of organised walks taking place across the peninsula to raise more awareness of suicide and funds for Pieta, a charity dedicated to preventing suicide and self-harm.

One of the walks taking place is at Greencastle, where walkers are asked to assemble at Scoil Cholmcille NS in the village for a 4.15am pre-dawn start.

Participants will then follow a scenic coastal route along the shore path. A highlight of the walk is a specially illuminated kilometre, where soft lighting guides walkers through a reflective space. This section offers a moment of quiet remembrance for loved ones lost.

The walk continues to Sweet Nellie’s Beach, where the rising dawn mirrors the core message of the event: That even in the darkest moments, light and hope can emerge.

Participants will then make their way back to the village together, reinforcing the message that no one has to face life’s challenges alone.

Local Inishowen-based counsellor Elly Barr, of Empower Counselling Services, is helping to support and promote this important event, alongside a dedicated group of volunteers who generously give their time each year to make the walk possible. Their continued commitment has helped sustain this meaningful tradition in Greencastle.

Meanwhile, a registration afternoon will take place at McKenna’s, Moville on Friday, May 1st, from 1pm to 3pm, when people can sign up for the walk and purchase event t-shirts. Alternatively, registration is available online by visiting www.pieta.ie, selecting Donegal, and choosing the Greencastle walk.

All members of the community are encouraged to take part.
