Updated 184-page guide offers homeowners clear advice on navigating the defective blocks scheme and rebuilding their homes

A new, updated edition of Donegal Rebuild magazine has been launched to provide homeowners in the county with information and advice on the latest changes to the defective blocks scheme.

The 184-page publication is designed as a comprehensive, practical guide for families embarking on the difficult journey of demolishing and rebuilding their homes.

It offers clear, accessible information on every stage of the process - from applying to the State’s grant scheme to planning, financing and construction - and includes inspiration for decorating and furnishing newly built homes.

Among the feature articles is an interview with Anne Blake, who has rebuilt her family home near Trentagh. Anne showed Donegal Rebuild around her beautiful new home at Garrowcarry and described how the devastation of defective blocks and demolition eventually gave way to a new, open-plan, future-proofed home.

Other features include an interview with Neil Gallagher and Annmarie McFadden, community facilitators with the Donegal Local Development Company, who share their experience of helping homeowners navigate the often complicated grant scheme. Financial advisor Pascal Curran also offers invaluable guidance on how to keep funds flowing to ensure a build stays on track.

Counsellors Tracey McKeague and Gary Doherty speak to Declan Magee about the emotional stress caused by living with defective blocks, and how therapy can help people acknowledge, address and overcome it.

There is much more besides, including features on building options, energy efficiency, solar power, project management, landscaping and the latest interior design trends.

The magazine also includes a directory of trusted tradespeople and service providers, many of whom have direct experience supporting affected homeowners through the reconstruction process.

“There was a good response to our first edition last year, and we’ve now produced a second, updated magazine to reflect the changes to the defective blocks scheme that came into effect in February,” editor Damian Dowds said. “Those higher caps and increased square foot build rates are finally in place and will narrow the shortfall homeowners face when rebuilding their homes.

“This magazine doesn't dwell on the politics of the scheme - that’s something that we cover extensively on DonegalLive.ie online and in our local newspapers.

“Instead, this magazine aims to provide practical guidance and advice for people affected by bad blocks, no matter what stage of the journey they’re on.”

Published by Iconic Media Group, Donegal Rebuild runs to 184 pages and retails at €5.95.
