Donegal County Council has been urged address a long-standing lack of footpaths in the centre of Killygordon village.

The situation around the N15 junction on the Convoy Road has been a concern for many years.

Raising the issue at Wednesday’s Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting, Cllr Patrick McGowan called on the council to “come up with the necessary funding to do what has to be done.”

“This has gone on for 20 years,” he added. “There is no footpath in the town centre on either side of the road.

“It’s a serious health and safety issue and there have been accidents on this path.”

Members agreed to bring the motion forward to the next full meeting of Donegal County Council on March 30.

In its written response, the council said works had previously been completed in Killygordon using Transport Infrastructure Ireland grant funding to improve pedestrian facilities along and across the N15. These works included new crossing facilities at the junction with the road towards Crossroads and at the Convoy Road junction.

A separate section of footpath was also completed along the Convoy Road, around 50 metres back from the N15 junction. However, the council said a gap remains between this section and the works carried out along the N15.

The council said that constructing a continuous footpath at the location would require the acquisition of third-party lands. It said multiple attempts had been made to acquire the lands at the time the earlier works were being carried out, but these were unsuccessful.

The executive added: "There is no current funding source for further works at this location; however, all funding and resourcing options are being examined to progress these works."
