'As Sean was reading the newspaper, Vera asked if she could see part of it for job seeking or whatever it was at the time and from that day on, that journey became not two individuals, but one'

The funeral took place on Wednesday May 1 of Sean Lang from Rossnowlagh Road, Ballyshannon and formerly of Sooey, Ballygawley, Co. Sligo.

He died peacefully at his residence, in his 91st year, surrounded by his caring family.

Chief celebrant Fr Adrian Gavigan P.P. Ballintra told mourners at St Patrick’s Church, Ballyshannon that they were gathered to celebrate the long life that Sean was blessed with, although in his death, there was also great sadness and loss.

Sean was born in Ballygawley, Sligo to parents Elizabeth and Johnny back in 1933 to a family of four, sister Maura, Sheila and brother Padraig.

Although he did not announce it to the world, he was a man of deep faith, he said, as exemplified in his home every night, mourners were told, “ a deep and great prayer for himself”.placeholder image

ABOVE: The late Sean Lang, Ballyshannon RIP

“Today is a day to celebrate a wonderful life, a long life of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many”.

He always had a great memory of his childhood days growing up in Sligo, never forgetting his roots.

Working life began in accountancy while staying with his sister Sheila in London and later Belfast, where he was to meet his wife, now retired GP, Dr Vera Lang.

And Fr Gavigan said that it was the first time that “a newspaper would be blamed for bringing two people together”.

“As Sean was reading the newspaper, Vera asked if she could see part of it for job seeking or whatever it was at the time and from that day on, that journey became not two individuals, but one”.

He recalled that marriage, his family and later grandchildren as deceased watched them “flourish and grow . . . that was the essence of Sean’s life”.

His friends of which he had many both through his work and community were attracted by a very outgoing, welcoming and warm personality.

He was a constant force of stability for his family through “the thick and the thin of life” and by giving ‘good example’ and love.

Sean is predeceased by his sister Maura and brother Padraig and his passing is deeply regretted by his wife Vera, son Andrew, daughter Sarah and daughter-in-law Olga.

Much loved by his grandchildren Erin, Eabha, and Amelia and sister Sheila and to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Funeral at St. Patrick's Church for Mass of the Resurrection was followed by cremation at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.
