The Last Century Boy is published by Austin Macauley Publishers, is more than just a memoir; it is a sprawling, 14-chapter journey through the heart of 1960s and 70s Ireland.
Following his illness, Pat found his concentration severely hampered. Searching for a way to process his experiences, he began writing poems and short stories. This creative outlet eventually evolved into a full-length publication that balances raw honesty with a distinct sense of wit.
"There’s only so much TV and Facebook you can watch," the author noted, reflecting on the period when his health forced him to swap the screen for the pen.
This is a book about growing up in rural Ireland, the educational system (or lack thereof), the Catholic Church and its grip on society. It is also a social and cultural history of the 60s and 70s in Ireland. It is also a book that informs the readers through life as someone who suffers from ADHD and dyslexia.
While much of the book is rooted in true-to-life social and cultural history, Pat peppers the narrative with "tall tales" and "off-the-wall" humour, ensuring that the heavy themes of sadness and institutional critique are balanced with laughter and thrill.
The Last Century Boy is available now through Austin Macauley Publishers online.
