Plaques in memory of the late Nora Houston and John McGee have been unveiled in the garden at the rear of St Columba’s Community Centre, Burtonport, by their daughters Mary Ellen Hyland and Michelle McGee.

Sadly, both Nora and John passed away within 10 days of one another, with Nora’s death occurring on April 8 and John’s on April 18.

The event got underway with prayers from local PP Fr Pat Ward, before he blessed the plaques. The large attendance present then moved into the Community Centre for tea, coffee and food.

Also present were local priest Fr John Joe Duffy, CC, Creeslough and Pat the Cope Gallagher TD, PRO of the Community Centre, David Alcorn acted as MC and thanked the staff and committee of the Centre, who were 100% behind this idea since it was first mooted.

He then paid a very comprehensive tribute to both people. Nora, as a community activist and John as an outstanding tradesman, who worked on a CES Scheme out of the centre for almost 10 years.

Nora will always be remembered for her long years involved with Burtonport Community Alert, the Good Morning Service and above all for being the founder member of the market/bargain rail, which greatly helped with the running of the centre’s costs over the years and the development of our beautiful garden and also her support towards the Burtonport Railway Walk and Burtonport Festival.

John, as a CES worker, was also very committed to our community projects, like the Centre, railway walk, our local festival, but above all the community garden at the centre, where he erected the new polytunnel and various seating.

He took great pride in everything he did and with health and safety as a priority. Thanks were given to the very big crowd gathered, which showed how high an esteem both Nora and John were held in. May Nora and John have eternal rest in Belcruit and Annagry cemeteries.
