Rail campaigners hold talk over Letterkenny-Derry line

The West Ulster Railway Initiative was part of a meeting to discuss their plans to restore rail in the North West
The West Ulster Railway Initiative (WURI) met with the Government in a bid to advance plans to restore the mainline railway between Letterkenny and Derry City.
A delegation from the organisation met with Minister Seán Canney TD at Government Buildings in Leinster House, Dublin, on Tuesday, September 22.
The meeting was facilitated by Minister of State Charlie McConalogue TD and was attended by WURI chairperson, Canon David Crookes, secretary Charles D. Barclay, Judge Seán MacBride, Richard Logue, Mary Farren-Casey and Liam Mulligan.
The delegation outlined the importance of restoring rail connection in the Northwest during the meeting.
The latest WURI also called for the proposed Letterkenny-Derry railway to be designated as Critical Infrastructure and aligned with the Derry to Portadown route within the National Railway Plan submitted to European authorities.
This engagement follows a meeting earlier this year with Northern Ireland's Minister for Infrastructure, Liz Kimmins MLA, at Stormont.
WURI, an organisation that consists of men and women from Donegal, was founded in 2001 and campaigns for the advancement of restoring Donegal’s railways.
