A native of Letterkenny, Albert McGroarty made Cobh his home - and he dedicated years to boxing in Cork
Tributes have poured in following the death of Cork boxing stalwart and Letterkenny native Albert McGroarty.
Albert passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 9, surrounded by his family in the care of nurses at Mercy University Hospital.
He was Letterkenny born, but Cobh in County Cork was very much his adopted home.
A passionate proponent of the sweet science, Albert was a guiding light for the young boxers over many years.
Albert and his family lived for many years at St. Eunan's Terrace in Letterkenny.
He was very well known in the community and many will remember Albert dedicating much of his time with young football players who lined out for Main Street in the old Letterkenny and District Schoolboys League back in the 1980s.
In 2020, he received a presentation from the Cork Boxing Fraternity Association for his dedication to boxing in Cork. He received a special presentation from Conal Thomas to mark the occasion.
A citation at the time read: “Over the years having many successes with Cobh boxers in countless Cork Championships, Munster Championships and All-Ireland Championships. His dedication didn’t go unnoticed.”

“Albert was a true boxing man and dedicated over 30 years to boxing in Cobh and to the greater Cork boxing community. We Would like to extend our deepest Condolences to Albert's family at this sad time. Albert will be deeply missed and will be always remembered.”
Albert McGroarty is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Olive, son Mark, daughters Tracy, Kelley and Donna, grandchildren Dean, Rebekah, Jessica, Katelyn, Luke, Olivia, Ella, Holly and Abigail, daughter-in-law Kathleen, son-in-law Robbie, along with Brian and Martin, sister, brothers, extended family and a large circle of friends.
