Seamus Coleman calls time on Everton career after 17 seasons on Merseyside

The Killybegs man, who has made 433 appearances for the Merseyside club since arriving from Sligo Rovers in 2009, revealed the news in a message posted on Everton’s YouTube channel on Friday morning
Seamus Coleman has confirmed that this season will mark the end of his playing career with Everton.
The Killybegs man, who has made 433 appearances for the Merseyside club since arriving from Sligo Rovers in 2009, revealed the news in a message posted on Everton’s YouTube channel on Friday morning.
"Hi Evertonians, just a message to say that after over 17 years at this amazing football club, this year will be my last as a player," Coleman said in his message.
While the 37-year-old former St Catherine’s man stopped short of confirming his retirement from football altogether, he did reveal that Everton have offered him the chance to remain involved with the club in another role.
Coleman also said he plans to feature for Ireland in the upcoming summer friendlies before making a decision on the next stage of his career.
"I want to have some time over the summer to focus on what's next, for me and for my family," Coleman said.
"Obviously, my love for Everton is something you all know about and I have a huge love for Ireland as well.
"I'm going to take some time over the summer, play the Ireland games and take some time with my family to decide what's next.
"The club have been unbelievable with me. They've offered me an opportunity to stay on with the football club. The manager has been great, the staff have been great.
"It's such an important decision over my future. I'm going to take a nice long holiday with my family and look back on what has been an amazing time as an Everton footballer.
"This will always be my club. Thank you for letting me be part of it for more than 17 years."
Coleman signed a one-year extension at the conclusion of last season, but injuries limited him to just three Premier League appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.
His most recent outing came in the 1-0 victory away to Manchester United in November, when he was forced off after only 10 minutes.
Before that setback, he enjoyed an impressive return to the international fold with the Republic of Ireland after initially being left out of Ireland’s September squad, which suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Armenia.
A veteran of UEFA Euro 2016, Coleman played a key role in Ireland’s victories over Portugal and Hungary last November.
He also remained on the pitch until extra-time in the World Cup qualification play-off semi-final defeat to Czechia in March.
