Serious concerns around speeding in Greencastle; online petition launched

Council urged to implement much-needed road safety measures before a tragedy occurs
Speeding traffic on Greencastle’s ‘upper road’ has been a serious concern for many years – and now there are renewed calls for action to prevent a possible tragedy.
The problem centres around a busy stretch of the L-1471 road just north of the fishing village that includes Greencastle Community Centre, a number of local housing estates, a prominent corner shop and a church.
A petition has now been launched, calling on Donegal County Council to urgently implement much-needed traffic calming measures at the location to allay ongoing fears.
Manager of the Greencastle Community Centre, Susan McAleer, explains the issue.
“Greencastle Community Centre is a constant hub of activity, welcoming a continuous flow of people of all ages, from young children, to older adults and adults with additional needs.”
“However, the current high volume and speed of traffic poses a significant and unacceptable risk to our service users. Despite previous concerns raised with the Council regarding these hazardous conditions, no action has yet been taken.”
Susan added: “The safety of everyone who uses our centre is paramount, making traffic calming measures essential for a secure and accessible environment.”
Members of a local Sinn Fein group are also fully supportive of the calls for road safety measures.
Toni Devine, who stood for election to the Council for Sinn Fein in 2024, said: “When we canvassed last year, speeding was one of the top local issues that people wanted to see dealt with. This is why we are active now.”

David Simpson, one of the organisers, has pointed out how Redcastle has had traffic calming measures put in place, but, he says, they had to wait until someone was knocked down before the Department of Transport would stump up the money to make Redcastle safer.
“We don’t want to wait until a local resident, child or older person is injured before this stretch of the road in Greencastle is made safer,” he warned.
