Cllr Martin Scanlon is happy with the new signage on the country road, but feels further improvements need to be made

Cllr Martin Scanlon calls for changes on the Glenfin Road, Ballybofey.

Cllr Scanlon explains that the road, which links the Donegal Road at the Roadhouse Bar to Glenfin Road, is being used as a bypass throughout the duration of the Ballybofey and Stranorlar works.

The issue was previously brought up by Cllr Scanlon in a Lifford-Stranorlar MD meeting last October, where he felt as though speed vans would be ‘a great deterrent.’

“I have been asking for the speed van to be placed on Cappry,” he said. “That has been used for a bypass. [The GoSafe speed vans] have been sitting in the same locations for the last fifteen years and everyone knows they’re there.

Following on from this, Cllr Scanlon welcomed the new signs warning motorists of pedestrians on the Cappry Road; however, the independent councillor calls for further improvements.

“Out on the road towards Logue’s Bridge, the warning of walkers on the road is a welcome first step,” he said, “but we need to be looking for a footpath solution out there towards the bottom on Capry, and even further on. We need to be trying to source funding for like that.”

In response to Cllr Scanlon’s request to change the location of the GoSafe Speed van, the council’s Senior Roads Engineer, Clare McGeever, explains that the locations of the speed van are discussed with An Garda Síochána Donegal.

“There’s no problem with members raising concerns about speed or road safety,” she said, “we do discuss locations at the collision prevention meetings with the gardaí in relation to GoSafe van locations.

“They do look at those issues and if there is somewhere suitable for the GoSafe van to pull in.”
