“From our woodlands to our wild Atlantic shores, there are so many ways for people to experience and appreciate the biodiversity around them”

Donegal’s landscapes are rich in life, and during Biodiversity Week 2026, people are invited to step into nature and experience that biodiversity up close.

From peaceful woodland walks to coastal exploration, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Highlights this year include the chance to wander in Drumboe Woods, guided nature walks delivered in partnership with An Taisce, opportunities to Explore Your Shore along the spectacular coastline of West Donegal, gardening for biodiversity workshops and guided walks in our wonderful Nature Reserves.

There will also be a wide range of engaging activities taking place as part of this year’s Biodiversity Festival at Glenveagh National Park, such as dawn chorus walks and a bat safari, offering opportunities for people to connect with nature, learn from experts and celebrate the unique habitats and species that make Donegal so special.

Julie Corry, Donegal County Council Biodiversity Officer, is encouraging people to get out and enjoy all that Donegal has to offer.

“Donegal County Council is delighted to support another exciting programme for Biodiversity Week 2026. From our woodlands to our wild Atlantic shores, there are so many ways for people to experience and appreciate the biodiversity around them. This year’s events offer something for everyone and provide a great opportunity to connect with nature and learn how we can all play a role in protecting it.”

Biodiversity walks and talks coordinated by Donegal County Council are this year supported by funding from the Heritage Council’s County Biodiversity Action Plan programme and through the NPWS’s Local Biodiversity Action Fund.

National Biodiversity Week is celebrated across Ireland and is coordinated by the Irish Environmental Network (IEN), with support from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), bringing together communities, organisations and individuals to connect with nature and raise awareness of Ireland’s biodiversity.

Full details of all events led or supported by Donegal County Council are available on https://www.donegalculture.ie/en/explore/festivals-programmes/biodiversity-wee and www.biodiversityweek.ie, with updates also shared across social media channels.
