Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher spoke fondly of Ludden, who originally wrote and recorded ‘Mary From Dungloe’
Donegal TD Pat the Cope Gallagher has paid tribute to the late Dónal Lunny, describing him as a “great friend” of the Mary from Dungloe International Festival and west Donegal in general.
The revered folk musician and producer Lundy died on Friday morning, October 23, at St James's Hospital in Dublin following a battle with cancer.
Deputy Gallagher said: “A dark cloud descended over west Donegal when news broke of the sad passing of Donal Lunny, whose mother, Mary Mhaggie, hailed from Ranafast.
“Dónal was a member of the group The Emmet Spiceland Band, who originally wrote and recorded our song ‘Mary From Dungloe’.
“Always a great friend to the festival and our area, he will be sorely missed. Heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends at this sad time. Deepest sympathy to his brother Manus, who lives at Braade Kincasslagh, and Yvonne, to his extended family, friends, and his multitude of fans. Ar dhéis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”
