These routes are made for walking! New heritage trail coming to Buncrana
Wonder Wander project aims to showcase the very best of the town’s rich culture and history; Public consultation planned for July 22nd
The people of Buncrana are being invited to play a central role in creating a new heritage walking trail that will celebrate the town's rich history, architecture, and unique local stories.
A major public consultation event will take place at Buncrana Library on Wednesday, July 22, from 5pm to 8pm, giving residents an opportunity to share their memories, favourite places and the stories that make the town special.
Organisers are encouraging people of all ages to attend, stressing that the trail is being created by the community, for the community.
The consultation forms part of the Wonder Wander Trails initiative, a series of free, self-guided heritage walking trails developed in partnership with local communities.
The project, being delivered in collaboration with Donegal County Council, combines well-known landmarks with hidden gems, inviting visitors and residents alike to discover a town through interactive maps, storytelling and architectural heritage.
Ahead of the evening event, organisers will also host a pop-up information stall around Buncrana from 12 noon until 4pm, where members of the public can learn more about the project and share their ideas.
The library event will feature a range of interactive activities designed to encourage discussion and participation, while historic archives of Buncrana, kindly provided by the library, will also be on display, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the town's past.
Project organisers have already spent time exploring Buncrana's streets, learning about its history and meeting with local schoolchildren to hear about the places and stories that matter most to younger generations. They now hope the wider community will add its own memories and local knowledge to help shape the finished trail.
The completed Wonder Wander Trail will showcase Buncrana's architectural treasures and hidden gems, creating a lasting resource for residents and visitors.
