Up with the lark to walk into the light at Malin Head on

Dawn walk at Ireland’s most northerly point on 9 May to raise funds for child counselling charity Hughie’s Corner
An early morning fundraiser will be held in Malin Head next month to raise money for Hughie's Corner, a children's mental health charity.
Organised by Sharon Ward, ‘Walk Into The Light’ will leave the Crossroads car park at 4.15am on Saturday 9 May and walk to the Tower at Malin Head.
The walk will bring people together in support of Hughie’s Corner in Carndonagh, a counselling service set up in memory of little Hugh Simpson who sadly passed away at just 8 years of age. Hughie’s Corner provides counselling supports and play therapy for children and adolescents dealing with difficult issues such as bereavement, anxiety and separation.
Participants in the Malin Head walk will gather at the crossroads before making their way to Banba’s Crown to witness the sunrise. The walk begins before the dawn and will provide a powerful and symbolic start to the day.
Last year, around 100 people took part in the event, raising funds and awareness for the cause. Now in its third year, organisers are hopeful for a similar turnout on Saturday, 9 May.
While the event shares a similar spirit, it is run independently of Darkness Into Light which is organised on behalf of suicide prevention charity Pieta House. Instead, the Malin Head community has taken the initiative to support mental health services locally, ensuring that all funds raised go directly to Hughie’s Corner.
“We do it in aid of Hughie’s Corner and to highlight mental health issues for young people in Inishowen,” organiser Sharon Ward said. “All the money we raise goes to Hughie’s Corner. We are trying to get as many people involved as possible, especially young people, to show solidarity with their peers.”
