Watch: Photographer’s love of family and the ethereal beauty of Inishowen

The fine art photographer Adam Rory Porter from Buncrana shares Inishowen’s magic with the world, transforming landscapes and fleeting celestial wonders into timeless art

If you’ve ever been mesmerised by a photograph of the Northern Lights dancing over Inishowen’s rugged coastline or felt the weight of history in an image of Grianán of Aileach bathed in golden light, chances are you’ve encountered the work of Adam Rory Porter.

But behind the lens of this fine art photographer from Buncrana lies a man whose greatest masterpiece isn’t his art gracing the front page of The Irish Times, displayed in Áras an Uachtaráin, or showcased in his Northern Light Gallery.

Rather, it’s the love he shares with his family and the deep connection they foster with Donegal’s ancient, storied landscapes, the wider province of Ulster, and, when opportunity allows, the rest of mythical Ireland.

A Creative Soul Rediscovered

From his early days – shaped by his father Rory’s photography, his mother Gabrielle’s love of Irish, history and geography, and countless family Sunday drives across Ulster – to studying Art, Design, Photography, and Animation at secondary and third level, Adam’s path has always been painted in creative hues.

The Porter and McCann families brim with creativity, yet pursuing an artistic career wasn’t always straightforward.

Adam’s love of technology led him to establish a local IT business, but it was fatherhood that truly refocused his vision and rekindled his passion for photography.“Becoming a dad reignited my passion for photography” he reflects.

“There’s something about seeing the world through your children’s eyes that makes you appreciate the beauty around you even more.

”That beauty is everywhere in Inishowen – a peninsula Adam describes as a “living canvas.” Whether it’s the ever-shifting light on the wild Atlantic, the ghostly shimmer of the Northern Lights, or the stoic presence of the ancient ringfort Grianán of Aileach, his photographs don’t just capture Inishowen’s scenery – they evoke emotion.

Family: The heart of every frame

Ask Adam about his ideal day, and the answer is simple: family, heritage, and a good old-fashioned adventure. His wife, Angela MacLochlainn – a passionate historian, genealogist, and cartographer – is the “queen of our household” he says warmly, while their three daughters, his “princesses” are a constant source of joy.placeholder image

“Watching them grow, seeing their curiosity about our beautiful peninsula and the wider world – it’s the greatest inspiration,” he says.

“We’ll often pile into our seven-seater – Granny and Granda MacLochlainn included – with a picnic and head off to explore” he laughs.

“We’re obsessed with our history and heritage, so it might be Fort Dunree one day, the Wee House of Malin the next. Then we’ll grab fish and chips on the way home and relive the day through our photos together.”

A Legacy of light and land

Adam’s photography does more than document Inishowen – it champions it.

Through his Northern Light Gallery, he shares the peninsula’s magic with the world, transforming landscapes and fleeting celestial wonders into timeless art. His work is also available at www.irishhands.com – a new platform dedicated to supporting artists and creative makers from Inishowen and the north-west. “This place is so very special,” he says.

“Every prehistoric rock art site, every ruin, every sunset, every stretch of coast has a story. If my photos can make someone feel even a fraction of what I feel when I’m out there, then I’ve done my job.

”For Adam, his work isn’t just about capturing Inishowen’s land or seascapes – it’s about love, legacy, and the ties that bind us to this wild and wonderful corner of Ireland.
