Winds are expected to veer northwesterly and will be coupled with large coastal waves, according to Met Éireann

Donegal is set to be hit by high, sustained winds and large coastal waves.

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow wind warning for Donegal, with Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare also affected. A similar warning has been issued in Northern Ireland for Antrim, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.

The warning takes effect in Donegal from 3am on Saturday, and will remain in effect until 6pm on Sunday.

Met Eireann is advising of sustained strong and gusty westerly winds veering northwesterly coupled with large coastal waves.

Potential impacts:

• Wave overtopping and/or spray

• Difficult travelling conditions especially near the coast

• Some fallen trees

The national forecaster is advising that a period of strong winds on Saturday in particular is likely to lead to some transport disruption.

A marine weather warning for small craft is currently in place, with Force 6 or higher winds on all coastal waters. It will remain in place until midnight on Saturday.
