Caitlín Ní Bhroin from Machaire Rabhartaigh says she is ‘passionate about issues in rural Ireland, the Gaeltacht, the Irish Language, Irish medium Education and housing especially in Gaeltacht areas for Gaeilge speakers’

A Donegal woman will contest tomorrow’s Seanad by-election.

Caitlín Ní Bhroin from Machaire Rabhartaigh is a member of the Údarás na Gaeltachta board, which is a nominating body for the Seanad.

A by-election is taking place tomorrow, Friday, because Seán Kyne TD went to Dáil Éireann as Catherine Connolly became President of Ireland.

Ms Ní Bhroin is among four candidates seeking election, which is voted on by 233 members of the house.

She will be running against Ray McAdam, Fine Gael, who is a Dublin City Councillor and former Lord Mayor; Dr Maeve O'Rourke, Independent, a human rights lawyer and legal academic supported by the Labour Party and the Social Democrats and Patrick Paul Walsh, also Independent, professor of global affairs and sustainable futures at University College Dublin (UCD)

Ms Ní Bhroin said: “My 30-year career history to date is Irish medium education, Irish Language Planning in Cloich Cheann Fhaola, Gaeltacht community development in An Ghaeltacht Láir and teaching adults Irish as a part-time interest.

“I am travelling tomorrow to Dáil Éireann, where the ballot box will be opened at 11am.”

Ms Ní Bhroin holds a BA Hons in Irish Language and Literature and a Masters from the University of Ulster and her election agent is her daughter, Bláithín McKee.

“I am passionate about issues in rural Ireland, the Gaeltacht, the Irish Language, Irish medium Education and housing especially in Gaeltacht areas for Gaeilge speakers who wish to contribute to Gaeltacht life,” she said.

“I was a member of the group which visited Brussels with Tinteán in March 2025 where MEPs there were of great assistance to us about Gaeltacht housing issues. I am independent with no party and I can work with everyone.”
