Work has begun on the construction of a new social housing development in Milford.

The Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Pauric McGarvey welcomed the commencement of the work during sod-turning ceremony at An Chúirt Ghlas, Rossgarrow.

The development, being delivered by Donegal County Council under the Design and Build programme, represents an investment of €4.4 million through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage's Social Housing Investment Programme and will provide 12 much-needed social housing units for the Milford area. The scheme comprises two one-bedroom apartments and ten two-bedroom apartments, providing modern, high-quality accommodation to help address housing demand within the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, Pauric McGarvey said: “I am delighted to mark the commencement of this important social housing development at An Chúirt Ghlas, Milford. This project represents a significant investment in our community and demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering much-needed homes for local people. These new homes will provide safe, modern and energy-efficient accommodation for individuals and families while helping to meet housing needs within the Milford area.”

A key feature of the development is the use of Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF), a modern method of construction that offers excellent energy efficiency, sustainability and long-term comfort for residents.

The development will also include six ground-floor homes designed to enhance accessibility and support independent living for older residents and those with mobility needs.

Mayor McGarvey also acknowledged the contribution of all those involved in bringing the project to construction stage."I would like to acknowledge the work and commitment of the Housing and Design Teams within Donegal County Council, together with Axis Construction Limited, and all consultants and stakeholders involved in this project.

Their dedication and collaboration have been instrumental in reaching this important milestone.

“Housing remains one of the most important priorities for local government. Developments such as An Chúirt Ghlas demonstrate our commitment to providing sustainable, high-quality homes that will have a lasting positive impact on the lives of local people and on the wider Milford community. I look forward to returning for the official opening when the development is completed."

The project is being constructed by Axis Construction Limited and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.

The development forms part of Donegal County Council's ongoing programme to increase the supply of high-quality social housing throughout the county and support the creation of sustainable and inclusive communities.
